West Bengal - Political Scenario

The main feature of democracy is the right to vote which enables the citizens to choose government of their choice. India is the largest democratic country in the world comprising of central government and several state governments. Elections for selecting government are held after every five years, however some times when the ruling government looses its majority either in parliament or in state assembly then mid-term elections are held by the election commission.

The major dominating political parties in scenario of Indian politics are Indian National Congress and Bhartiya Janata Party. Apart, from this various regional parties in states also play an influencing role in deciding the future of politics at state and national level.

Kolkata being the capital of West Bengal is also major point of politics in the state. The major political parties in the state are Communist Party of India (Marxist) headed by left front, the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI). In recent years Trinamool Congress has emerged as a competing party in the state challenging the existence of the ruling CPI (M).

However, the main dominating political party in the state of West Bengal has been Communist Party of India (Marxits) headed by left front. The party has been heading the state since 1977, when former chief minister Honorable. Late Shri Jyoti  Basu took the charge as the chief minister of the state and remained on the same post till 2001. After his resignation due to health problems the senior members of the party Shri. Buddhadev Bhattacharya was assigned the charge of Chief Minister of the state.

The next assembly elections of the West Bengal assembly are proposed to be held in 2011.
