The operators of metro rail services are Kolkata Metro Zone of Indian railways for line 1 and Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (KMRC). The feasibility study for the line was carried out in 2004 by Pacific Consultant International Group. The projected cost for east west metro corridor project is more than USD1 billion .
The project is being worked in two phases and is projected to be operational by Q4, 2014. The funding of the project is in the form of, 30% of cost by West Bengal government, 25% by central government and 45% funded by Japan bank for international cooperation.
Lee Harris Pomeroy Architects was awarded to carry out preliminary plan of the line including design of six underground metro stations and establishment of land use programs in station areas. Afcons infrastructure a subsidiary of Shapoori Pallonji Group was awarded the deal for design and construction three underground stations.
The infrastructure company will construct about three kilometers of twin bored tunnel of which 520m is under the river, Afcons is in a joint venture with Transtonnelstroy (Russian based company).
The North-South metro corridor total number of metro stations is 24 of which seven are elevated railway stations, two are surface railway stations and 15 are underground railway stations.
