Passport and Its Purposes
A passport is a document which acts as a ‘proof of citizenship’ in India under the ‘The Passports Act 1967’. The main purpose of the passport is to enable its holder to travel internationally. Apart from this, it also serves as a proof of identity for several purposes including opening of bank accounts, getting on electoral rolls etc. Passports are issued at 37 offices in India and at 162 several missions, consulates and embassies abroad.
Different Types of Passport
There are different types of passports which are issued depending on the travel purposes:
Regular passport or P Type Passport – It is deep blue in color. It is given to regular to regular citizens for normal travel including studies, business and holidays. It ranges from ranges from 36 pages to 60 pages
Official passport or S type Passport – It has a white cover. It is given to officials of government of India who go abroad for business purpose
Diplomatic passport or D type Passport – It has maroon color. It is issued to officials at higher ranks and diplomats, ambassadors etc
Apart from these there are several passport offices, Indo-Bangladesh passports to Indian nationals resident in West Bengal, the North Eastern States. These passports respectively permit travel to Bangladesh and do not allow one to travel to other countries.

Then, one should fill the online form and also pay the money online using a debit card or credit card or online banking or enter the challan number after paying money through designated branches of State Bank of India. After this, an appointment time would be given to visit the passport office in Kolkata. One has to choose a date and a time within one year in passport.
